Play!

Open english-language acting workshop for adults

Is it for you?

Genre: open theatre lab

Recommended for: adventurous beginners as well as those with some acting experience—basically anyone who would enjoy diving with us into the world of drama games and scene creation in English.

Prerequisite: none

When: every Sunday evening from 6 to 8 PM

What happens in a session?

We play drama games and experiment with improvisation exercises. We step out of our skin, trying on new roles and situations. The aim of the open sessions is first and foremost carefree play and experiencing the power of drama and improvisation.

I’ve never done anything like this before…

Then it’s time to give it a try! No prior experience is required to take part—just a little openness and curiosity.

Why is it worth coming?

  • first of all, because playing is fun;
  • because it helps you switch off and recharge;
  • beyond the joy of creating and playing—while meeting new people—the tools of drama, theatre and improvisation can bring many other positive side effects into your life:
  • your communication skills improve;
  • your creative energies are freed up;
  • you can try yourself in a wide variety of situations;
  • you become braver about making mistakes;
  • you can step out of your comfort zone within safe boundaries;
  • you get to know yourself better;

and last but not least, it brightens your day—guaranteeing a great end to the week.

Lénárd Ilyés

He graduated in 2006 with a degree in Hungarian language and literature from the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Szeged, and also studied at the studio of the Szeged National Theatre.

Since then, he has been working as a freelance actor, director, and theatre educator. As an actor, he has performed in several repertory theatres (e.g. Budaörs Playhouse, Karinthy Theatre, Szeged National Theatre) and in even more independent theatre companies (e.g. Teatr Novogo Fronta Prague, Andaxínház, GoBe Dance Company, Utca-Szak, Radikális Szabadidő Színház, Ködszurkálók). He currently leads his own production workshop, Amargant Theatre Workshop, which focuses on studio and community theatre productions, and each year he directs several performances that he writes himself based on the actors’ improvisations.

Community theatre is an integral part of his life. Within the framework of Hatásszünet Workshop, he directs several community performances each year with non-professional participants, and in addition to the Traktor Works festival, he is also the founder of Metro Works Theatre Free School, which brings together various theatre workshops in Budapest.

The training materials are mainly inspired by previous collaborations with the following artists:

Csaba Formanek (Radikális Szabadidő Színház); Gábor Csetneki (Szárnyak Színháza); Oleg Zhukovsky (La Puskin Theater);

Viktor Szivák-Tóth

I am interested in all forms of community theatre. I create theatrical performances with existing or emerging communities, or I produce participatory theatre productions for them. Theatre creates community, and the community has a need to express itself and its relationship to the world—also in public spaces. I have had the opportunity to work with all age groups, from six-year-olds to senior citizens.

My home workshop is KB35 Inárcs, my main base is the theatre education workshop at Szkéné Theatre, Rakpart3, but I also enjoy collaborating with many other ensembles.
