Why are Neil Simon’s comedy situations timeless? Why do we laugh at Christopher Durang’s quirky characters? And what attracts us to Monty The reason is that this genre requires a complex style of play, where not only the humorous situations and characters have to be handled with care and skill, but also their inner truth and authenticity have to be preserved. The aim is for the actor to deliver a truly exciting and authentic comic performance.

Fortunately, there are many useful tools and techniques available to help you move confidently in the world of comedy.

What can you expect this weekend?

In this workshop, we’ll explore the world of comedy in more depth and develop the skills needed to perform comic roles on stage. This time the focus will be on written texts rather than improvisation.
We will learn about the characteristics of different comedy styles such as absurd, black comedy, satire, parody, farce.  We will learn how to interpret and analyse comic scenes, how to approach comic texts effectively, how to poentiate and understand the rhythm of dialogue.

The workshop will discuss:
– Exploring the inner truth and purpose of the various comic characters that drive the comedy of the scenes.
– The layering power of subtext to enrich and nuance comic performance.
– Learning the basics of comic timing and performance, and exploring the relationship between physicality and humour.
– Exploiting the potential of situation comedy, character comedy and verbal humour.
– The effective use of props to create and assist in humorous situations.

All this will be learned through texts by outstanding comedy writers of the 20th century, which will be implemented in the form of paired scenes during the workshop.

Join us for this practical workshop and take your comic acting skills to a new level!
