The world of comedy in and beyond physicality
In the 2024-2025 season, you can take the plunge into different areas of comedy. You’ll master the techniques of slapstick comedy to create action-packed and humorous scenes, marvel at the world through the wonderful attitude of the clown, study the still valid basics of comedy through the characters and situation comedy of Commedia Dell’Arte, and learn the tools to dig deep into a comedy text to maximise the potential of your characters and scenes.
Your guides for the comic journeys will be two professionals with great international experience, Fabrizio Paladin and Adam Boncz.
Slapstick comedy workshop
Date: 26-27. October 2024. 10:00-17:30
Course leader: Fabrizio Paladin
Welcome to the world of spectacular and funny stage actions!
Learn the ins and outs of elements familiar from the burlesque genre. Slap, defend, eat, react, find new comic stage play elements.
During the workshop you will learn the correct and precise execution of different stage brawl and action forms, techniques to enhance the comic effect and get ideas for building up and diversifying a stage conflict or brawl.
What's so funny? Clown and Physical Comedy workshop
Date: 23-24. November 2024. 10:00-17:30
Course leader: Adam Boncz
In this workshop we will explore what this joy is, try to bring out the playful and ridiculous clown in us and also hone our physical comedy skills. We’ll explore the important role our breathing plays in storytelling on stage, and discover why finding (and solving) a particular stage problem is an essential part of a comedic scene. We will learn how to plan and execute physical comedy situations so that we can apply them to any performance as an actor, comedian or clown.

During this intensive weekend course you will be guided step by step through the techniques necessary to authentically understand and perform Commedia Dell’Arte. You will gain an insight into the rich history of Commedia Dell’Arte and learn about its stock characters. We will work physically to find each character’s essential shape and movement. You will also learn about the techniques of performing the Masks, with the opportunity to work with original Commedia leather masks.
