Slapstick comedy - Guide to the slaps, reactions and the controlled body

Welcome to the world of spectacular and funny stage actions!
Learn the ins and outs of elements familiar from the burlesque genre. Slap, defend, stumble and fall, react, find new comic stage play elements.

During the workshop you will learn the correct and precise execution of different stage combat and action forms, techniques to enhance the comic effect and get ideas for building up and diversifying a stage conflict or combat.

What can you expect this weekend?

Slapstick comedy is generally understood as physical humor of a robust and hyperbolized nature where stunts, acrobatics, pain and violence are standard features. Slapstick uses visual action, such as harmless violence and optical illusions, to depict humor.
Slapstick is extremely used in cartoons such as Tom & Jerry, Wile E. Coyote and in comedy films from Charlie Chaplin to Jim Carrey through our Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.

During the workshop we will go through the techniques needed for comic, spectacular, but at the same time safe stage fights and actions. We will learn the importance of reaction and how various logical absurdities can serve as building blocks for a scene. Slapstick often relies on comic timing and controlled physical performance. These are also emphasised, and the conscious movement of the participants is developed.

„Comedy in slapstick lies in the basic tension between control and its loss, this is what I call the chaos enclosure or chaos management.
I believe that every actor should study slapstick, not only because it has a huge visual impact on the audience but above all because it is part of the fundamental technical knowledge of the art of acting: the ability to lose control and then find it again.”
